Sometimes is difficult to explain what is the "Japanese Culture" and even if they are really technologically advanced and effective in some ways, there is the cultural part that plays a big role.
For instance the Paperwork, the chain of command from the top down, the workplace, the smiles that are not smiles, and so on.
Just the day before leaving for japan, I was suggested the book called "Fear and Trembling" by Amelie Nothomb. (You can find the book here on amazon.com)
This book tells about the Young Amelie, grown with double culture (Belgian and Japanese) and the hard time she had working in japan (first job).
Just around $5.00 for the paper version and only 144 pages, so it's an easy read but will give you an inside look where you might never have the chance to look into ;)...
